Why do we need inclusion in innovation?

Zoe Hilton, Innovation Program Manager at Shaping Change, Cardiff and Vale UHB outlines why great ideas and innovations can come from anyone and should be for everyone.

The reality is that we all innovate regularly. We automatically change habits, systems and processes to be more efficient and effective. We introduce new ways of working, utilise new technology, seek solutions to specific workplace challenges by communicating with our networks, asking questions and seeking the experience of others. This is innovation. Inclusion is crucial in healthcare innovation because it ensures that all individuals, regardless of their background or demographic, have access to healthcare services and products that meet their needs. When healthcare innovation is inclusive, it can improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare disparities among demographics.

This is one great (or bad!) example of innovation without representation and inclusion:

Below are 4 reasons why inclusion is key for the development of innovation:

Below are 4 reasons why inclusion is key for the development of innovation:

  1. Addressing healthcare disparities:
Inclusive healthcare innovation can help address healthcare disparities by ensuring that healthcare products and services are accessible and affordable to everyone. This can help reduce health inequities and ensure that everyone has an equal chance of leading a healthy life.
  2. Improving patient outcomes:
When healthcare innovation is inclusive, it can lead to better patient outcomes. For example, innovations that are designed with input from diverse patient groups are more likely to be effective for a wider range of people.
  3. Driving innovation:
Inclusion can also drive healthcare innovation by bringing together diverse perspectives and ideas. When people from different backgrounds and experiences are involved in the innovation process, they can help identify unmet needs and develop solutions that are more effective and inclusive.
  4. Meeting regulatory requirements:
Inclusion is becoming increasingly important in healthcare innovation due to regulatory requirements. In many countries, regulations require that healthcare products and services be accessible to all individuals, regardless of their background or demographic.

Innovation without diversity and inclusion has the potential to divide populations or workforces rather than solve societal or workplaces challenges. This is often done without intent; I don't expect the designer of the office soap dispenser intended to create a product that only worked for a certain demographic, but it is a shocking reminder of the importance of considering diversity.
